Tea Party Wants to Change the Constitution
If the Tea Party is the protector of the Constitution,
why are they so uninformed and eager to change it?
Amendments They Want to Change or Don’t Understand
- 1st Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
- 2nd Amendment: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed
- 14th Amendment : anybody born in the U.S. is automatically a U.S. citizen
- 16th Amendment: Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration
- 17th Amendment: Senators will be chosen by the people, instead of state legislatures
Protectors of the Constitution
- TakeBackAmerica.org created a form letter for its members to demand that politicians, among other things, protect and preserve the Constitution, word for word, and not “change, manipulate, reinterpret, or walk all over.” But in the same letter, they also say they must repeal the 14th Amendment.
- Sarah Palin said “I’m out there fightin’ for Americans to be able to have a Constitution protected…To elect candidates who understand the Constitution....”
- Mike Lee said, “I hereby pledge to you that I will not vote for a single bill that I can’t justify by the text and original understanding of the Constitution,” while at the same time saying he would alter the 14th and 17th Amendments.
